ESLAB Fieldtrip to the Geulhemmerberg and the K/T boundary quarry
Geology of the K/T boundary section in the Geulhemmerberg quarry

The stratigraphy in the caves from bottom to top.

The Uppermost Maastrichtian is represented by poorly lithified cream coloured calcarenites with scattered macrofossils. Obvious sedimentary structures are rare due to pervasive bioturbation cq. burrowing, and near the top brownish burrows or borings appear that penetrate downwards from an irregular hardground surface, labelled Berg en Terblijt horizon (B&T).The fauna is shallow water tropical - subtropical fauna typical of the Maastrichtian type region, containing corals, rudists, mosasaurs, ammonites, bryozoans, belemnites etc.

ENCI cement quarry is the stratotype of the Maastrichtian stage
The irregular hardground surface displays a relief of about 1-1.5 m deep, alternating highs of 2-3 m and lows of 5-7 m wide. The depressions are filled with an alternation of coarse storm-debris and fine-grained marl/clay layers.
