Metamorphism in the Swiss Alps

My current research is focused on high-pressure metamorphic rocks in the Central Alps of Switzerland and Italy. I investigate several aspects of the development of these rocks. At the moment emphasis lies on assessing the distribution of the ages of high-pressure metamorphism, which I determine by means of Lu-Hf geochronology. The age distribution will help us develop a better understanding of the subduction and exhumation processes that were active during Alpine orogeny. Other themes I work on are the dynamics and kinematics of the later stages of exhumation of eclogites in the Central Alps, and symplectite-forming metamorphic reactions.

This research is being carried out under a postdoctoral fellowship of the Swiss National Science Foundation, awarded to Prof. Martin Engi.
In collaboration with Martin Engi and Alfons Berger of the Petrology Group, and Ilka Kleinhanns and Jan Kramers of the Isotope Geology Group at the Institut für Geologie, Universität Bern, Switzerland.
